I have never been one for big celebrations. I have passed many milestones in my life with little more than moving onto the next thing. It was with some trepidation that I rose to the challenge of thinking about how celebrating my success could actually empower performance and build my confidence. The literature certainly supports the hypothesis that celebrating is the key to enhanced success!
Why is celebrating the key to success?
There are many reasons! One that I found particularly powerful is that celebrating can actually help us determine what has been successful and what has not. If we don’t celebrate, we may not remember our successes and we might live to repeat the same mistakes over and over again – this is certainly something none of us wants! Celebrating also helps us to develop a mindset of success. Instead of lamenting on our failures, spending time thinking about celebrating our successes will shift our thoughts from the negative to the positive and toward future success. Celebration is also a strong motivator for continued performance. From the standpoint of physiological evidence, celebrating can lead to happiness and we know that this results in ‘happy chemicals’ being released in the brain. Finally, celebrating can help us share our success with others and who knows when they might need someone with our talents!
How might you celebrate? There are many ways to celebrate AND it doesn’t have to be a grand celebration each time you have a small win. Think about things such as taking time for self-care or spending time with people who are important to you. Build a practice of gratitude. Do whatever it is you love. If you love grand celebrations, make time for that! Just do it!
