Dr. Juliet Emamaullee is someone I have known since she was a medical student many years ago. We met through our work with the Association of Women Surgeons, and her confidence even early in her career was evident. I knew it would be only the start of what was yet to come! I have enjoyed watching her grow in her career and I know it is just the beginning of great things to come. She is currently the Associate Chief, Division of Clinical Research in the Department of Surgery at the University of Southern California.
When Juliet agreed to be a part of our Women with Confidence podcast series, I knew one of the things we would be discussing would be the intentional development of networks. She is involved in many initiatives nationally and internationally in her work around surgical transplantation. She speaks with as much passion for the patients she treats as she does her research work! She will ask for what she wants and has acted as a mentor and sponsor for many. She is always trying to help others achieve their vision of success for themselves. This is the ‘why’ behind the networks she builds.
We also spoke about the importance of a growth mindset and the ability to grow despite perceived failure. She is open and vulnerable when speaking about her failures and rises to the challenge of how to move forward and learn from her failures rather than pulling back in fear. This is an important element in empowering performance as she recognizes that failures are a common and important part of eventual success. The difference between successful people and those who are not is that successful people have had more failures!
There is a lot for all of us to learn from my discussion with Dr. Emamaullee. I am sure she will be an important confidence boost to everyone who listens!
