It was my distinct pleasure to interview Justice Anna Loparco who was appointed to the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench in 2019. It was lovely to get to know her a little better and I truly appreciated her vulnerability in speaking about her journey to success!
The title of this blog is intentional and I am sure it will be clear once you listen to our interview released widely through our podcast, Women with Confidence, on May 1, 2021. Justice Loparco knew she was destined to be a lawyer from a very young age. This is clear from our discussions around how she supported her family as she grew up. She was a daughter, a sister, a friend, but also a very strong advocate for those around her! The only thing standing in her way was a fear of speaking in public. This grew out of a diagnosed speech impediment. However, as they say, she persisted!
It was only many years later when she was asked to listen to her prerecorded voice that she recognized that the speech impediment was now mostly in her head. Although she remains cognizant of her speech in almost every interaction she has, it has not stopped her! It is a part of her mindset for success. She does not see it as a hindrance or an obstacle; rather she views it as a part of what has made her who she is today – an empowered professional woman!
We also spoke about the importance of intentionally forming professional networks. Early in her career, Justice Loparco allowed these networks to form organically. She has since become intentional about the process of forming important professional connections and mentors others to do the same. Justice Loparco and I speak about how essential it is for women to be active in supporting each other to identify and foster the relationships that will allow them to be successful.
