This spring our world was turned upside down by coronavirus. As we adapted to life and work at home, I watched my different friends embrace or shy away from the challenges of finding a novel way of working. Watching them has helped me to understand the difference in mindset. The growth and fixed mindsets as defined by Carol Dweck are often used in the context of education and as I talked with parents and children about their experience with online learning I have seen these mindset differences more clearly.
Some children and parents have embraced this challenge as an opportunity to learn, to figure out how to use computers and online learning platforms, which they see as an advantage for learning later in life. These people are displaying growth mindsets and are absolutely right, it will help for later in life! Others, however, have found this change to be very challenging and feel defeated. I hear things like “I am just not good with computers,” or “I can’t figure out how to teach my kids,” or “I guess I am not as good a student because I don’t understand what I am supposed to do.” These are all examples of a fixed mindset and I wonder how things will change as they move forwards through their schooling and lives.
And when I think about my career as a surgeon, will I be able to use a growth mindset to adjust to a “new normal” of partly virtual medicine? And will I be able to stay positive and see opportunities within the challenges of trying to provide good care with adjusted and limited resources? I am optimistic that with my knowledge of mindset and with supportive friends and colleagues to keep me on track that I will be able to rise to the occasion and prove myself a competent, confident surgeon.
