Have you ever read about strategies for how to be more confident, decided to try them, and found that they didn’t work?
I tried many different things and wondered why I still struggled. The seemingly simple things like affirmations, visualizing myself as confident, doing things that scared me, and changing my body language to hold my chin up and look people in the eye did not work. But gradually, through many discussions with my coach to plan for the challenging moments at work, I began to feel more confident.
As Debrah and I talked about confidence we realized that before we can give strategies to help confidence we need to talk about what gets in the way of confidence. As we talked we realized that over the courses of our career we had both struggled with several things and we came up with the six derailers of confidence. With this awareness we are better able to figure out the strategies that can be used to tackle each different derailer. While my confidence is not always accessible to me, I am learning to pay attention to what gets in the way, and then either find a way to move forwards or reflect with my coach as to what I could have done differently so that I can learn and do better next time.
